Audubon - The Quadrupeds of North America
Following the success of Audubon's The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, published in the 1840s, it was clear that many people wanted a complete document of the animals of America. But the imperial folio edition was costly and limited to wealthy collectors.
So in the late 1840s, Audubon and his sons began work on a smaller, octavo edition of the quadrupeds. These scaled down editions were more affordable and were published in between 1849-1870. Many were completed by John W. Audubon, as his father's health declined.
The octavo quadrupeds are a wonderful edition, offering much of the majesty of the imperial folios but in a smaller print that hangs well in pairs or sets.
